so…what is reiki?
To understand what Reiki is, let’s look at the word itself. “Rei-ki” (pronounced RAY-kee) is a compound word of two Japanese kanji. Rei (靈) is often understood as “spiritual,” “soul” or even “wise” or “divine.” Ki (氣) is that life-force energy that exists in every living thing. These two symbols can be broken down further, but that’s for a Reiki class in the future (maybe your future?). So Reiki (靈氣), as I understand it, has the meaning of “divinely guided soul energy.” This energy is wise, gentle, and loving. It goes where it needs to go in a one-way flow through practitioner to recipient to bring us back into the divine understanding of ourselves and our natural homeostasis. It is readily available, has no limit, can do no harm, and one can never have too little or too much of it…because, well, we are Reiki.
While it is not a replacement for medical treatment, Reiki has certainly been finding its footing more in the mainstream medical field as a complimentary treatment therapy. When people receive a Reiki treatment, they often report feeling calm, peaceful, warm, tingly, and more in touch with everything around them. Reiki is beneficial to anyone regardless of ailment — whether it be mental, emotional, or physical.
